Chocolate Hazelnut & Banana Milkshake (EF)

There are mornings when I just don't feel like gluten free toast with butter and jam, nor fried eggs on gluten free hasbrowns or even some gluten free muesli on yoghurt ....

sometimes I just want a smoothie.

Now, that's not in the "usual" morning smoothie sense. I mean, my Mum has green juices in the mornings and carrot juices and the like (she's a health nut - I like to say my mission is to feed her naughty gluten free treats!), but, it's just not me. I like my veggies with my lunch or dinner, or at the very least in an omelette! But.... if you DO want a fancy green-as-Jim-Carey's-Grinch-smoothie then be sure to check out this one!

As you can most probably guess, this morning I wanted a smoothie milkshake. It was 10.30am. I hadn't had breakfast. In fact, I'd only woken up relatively recently. This whole 'searching for a new job thing' doesn't have a start time, so I'm making the most of sneaky mid week lay-ins whilst I can! To me, 10.30am is a perfectly acceptable time to have a milkshake. So, rounding up a few necessary ingredients from my (nearly completed - yay!) kitchen, I threw everything in the big glass jug, pressed the pulse button on the blender....

...licked up an extra spoonful of Nutella whilst I waited... and wah-lah! A delicious (and reasonably nutritious) gluten free chocolate hazelnut banana milkshake! I highly recommend that the next time you wake up at 10am on a weekend morning you do the same - as it's just a little bit naughty to be having chocolate in your breakfast (especially on a weekday!).

Chocolate Hazelnut Banana Milkshake

Serves 1 thirsty gal or is enough for 2 little people

1/2 banana, frozen works nicely but isn't necessary

2-3 decent spoonfuls of Nutella or other chocolate hazelnut spread

a few more spoonfuls of Nutella to eat as you are pulsing the blender

1/3cup natural or Greek gluten free yoghurt (or a scoop of vanilla icecream)

200ml ice cold milk (any fat content you wish)

handful of ice cubes

Throw everything into a high-powered-ice-crushing blender. Pop the lid on. Pulse for a few moments (don't forget to eat the extra few spoonfuls of the Nutella at this point!).

Pour into a tall chilled glass. Slurp up through a couple of thick straws. Yummy!

Notes + Substitutions:

  • Make me dairy free by subbing for dairy free yoghurt and milk alternatives such as coconut or almond.
  • Can't have nuts? Use chocolate sauce instead or throw in some finely chopped dark chocolate or use chocolate ice cream.
  • Hate banana? Sorry got nothing for you, this is after all a banana choc smoothie. Perhaps try this strawberry one
